Back to School: Opportunity, Success, and Growth

It’s time to get kids back to school! Helping your kids transition from their “summer-selves” to their “student-selves” involves using their summer experiences to shape the ways they move forward. The school year is new, but their development continues.

Transitions are a time of change, uncertainty, risk, and reward. Moving from one grade to the next means new teachers, new peers, new topics, and maybe even a new school. Some kids may want to test out a new nickname, try out a new style, play a new sport, or participate in a new activity or club. All of this is an exciting part of growing up and shaping their future selves.

Back-to-school could also include new challenges that extend beyond the classroom. Are their friends kind? And if they are new, do they share the same values you emphasize with your kids? Are your kids prepared to say “NO” to peer pressure? Will they be exposed to risky behaviors such as underage drinking?
These can be trying times—for kids as well as for parents—but let your kids know that you are in this together. Have regular conversations about setting goals and expectations, making good choices, and standing up for what is right. Talk to them about real issues—like how alcohol affects their brains and offer solid ways to get out of a sticky situation.
Take action yourself in setting boundaries and working through difficult moments. Set examples for managing your busy schedule, coping with changes and stressors, and communicating with others. Kids are watching, learning, and taking cues from you!
Finally, work through roadblocks together in the style that suits you and your child best. We all falter, miss deadlines, or make poor decisions from time to time. Although one bad decision can lead to a stream of others, so can one good decision! Success and growth depend on how you deal with them—both individually and together. Conversations and actions matter!

Welcome to a new school year—we can’t wait to see how your conversations empower your kids to have continued success. Thank you for all you do to keep your kids alcohol-free. We are honored to have you in the Ask, Listen, Learn community!
